Founded in 1988 by June Taylor-Dixon, Northwest Dance Theatre is a non-profit youth ballet company celebrated for its dedication to both dance and the community of Greater Portland. The company is composed of pre-professional ballet students from June Taylor’s School of Dance and other dance schools state-wide. Over the years, Northwest Dance Theatre has provided young dancers the opportunity to gain performance experience, participate in educational outreach programs, work with prestigious choreographers, and share their love of dance with the public. With a firm foundation in classical technique, the company’s dance repertoire has grown to comprise various classical ballets and innovative contemporary works by both local and internationally acclaimed choreographers.

Alumni

Northwest Dance Theatre alumni have gone on to dance with professional companies such as Colorado Ballet, Ballet Idaho, Eugene Ballet, Houston Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Oregon Ballet Theatre, and Miami City Ballet. NWDT dancers have also garnered international attention as finalists in the Genee International Ballet Competition.

Born in Warwick, England, June Taylor-Dixon completed her training at the prestigious Pattison’s Academy of Dance and Drama in Coventry. She is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dance, the Royal Academy of Dance teacher’s program, the International Dance Teacher’s Association, and the Imperial Society of Dance Teachers. As a professional dancer, Miss June appeared with the Northern Ballet in England and the Wiesbaden Stadtsopera company in Germany. She also performed extensively on the London musical theatre stage, and toured the world as part of a music, comedy and dance duo known as ‘Con and June’.

Upon retiring from the stage, Miss June founded a school and pre-professional jazz company in Wiesbaden, Germany that quickly grew to be greatly acclaimed in the Wiesbaden dance community due to Miss June’s remarkable choreography and teaching. In 1983, Miss June moved to Portland, Oregon, where she founded June Taylor’s School of Dance in 1984 and later founded Northwest Dance Theatre in 1988. Miss June has choreographed a wide variety of classical and contemporary works for NWDT. By invitation, she has returned on several occasions to Europe to lecture and teach for the International Dance Teacher’s Seminars. She also owns and directs June Taylor’s School of Dance and is artistic director of NWDT.
